Reasons to Love Living in NE Denver
When we decided almost two years ago to take on the challenge of opening a state-of-the-art full service indoor climbing facility, we were driven by a desire to add something to our community that we felt was missing. Übergrippen is more than a business for us; it is a means for us to help make our community even better then it already is! My wife and I have been living in NE Denver for nearly a decade. We chose to raise our three boys in the Stapleton neighborhood because we saw in it everything we wanted for our family. The rich diversity offered by being in NE Denver (I may be the only one on earth to say this, but I LOVE our Quebec Street King Soopers…it is literally the mixing pot for our community). Cruising down “the Fax” past the Fox Theater and the rest of the Aurora Cultural Arts District on my way to Nuggs Ice Cream, Pinche Tacos or Argonaut Liquor. I love that we have multiple world class museums (DNMS, Wings Over the Rockies), the Denver Zoo, and a couple wild life preserves and nature centers (Bluff Lake and The Rocky Mountain Arsenal) all in our backyard. Then there is the abundance of local parks (ranging from the iconic City Park to the small neighborhood pocket parks), trails (Sand Creek, Westerly Creek/Green Way parks), and pools. Our kids have the opportunity to attend some of the top public schools in the city and state (East High School, DSST, Denver School of the Arts, McAuliffe, Bill Roberts, Denver Language School, Swigert, Odyssey, and many more). A favorite aspect my mine is the strong “keep it local” attitude with our community supporting our local small businesses and restaurants. We love all the great locally owned places to shop, eat, dine, drink, and serve. Going out to eat for our family could be a pizza from Oblio’s, Allegra, or Mici, Italian from the Cherry Tomato, a quiet romantic dinner at Tables, a meal with friends at The Bistro at Stapleton, or some pork creation from The Berkshire. For drinks there is always the enjoyable Lowry Beer Garden, or you can sample NE Denver’s own flavors at Station 26 Brewing, Fiction Beer Company, Mu, or Ursula Brewery (formerly Coda). Shopping for bikes (Cycleton, Denver Bicycle), clothes (June Ruby), food (Spinellis), alcohol (Wine Cellars at Stapleton, Vics, The Grape Leaf), hardware (Denver True Value, Ace on the Fax), kids toys (Timbuk Toys), and more it seems you can always find a small local business to shop at!
Let me finish just by telling you, our future members and patrons, how excited we are to open Übergrippen and make it part of the fabric of this NE Denver community. We look forward to becoming another great community business! CLIMB ON DENVER!
Countdown to Groundbreaking
Despite the lack of news coming out of the Übergrippen office the last few months, we have been hard at work over the winter trying to get ready for our much anticipated groundbreaking. We have become intimately familiar with various departments within The City of Denver including both Zoning and Planning and the Building Department. Our plans for the site and building were submitted in February and we are now working through the normal comment process. With some minor design changes being addressed by our design team (lead by the architects at Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative in Denver) we hope to be permitted within a month with ground breaking lead by our general contractor White Construction Group following quickly afterwards. Additional news on our path to groundbreaking, we have also officially closed on the purchase of the land which is located at 8610 E. 21st Ave., Denver, CO 80238 (see the article on the closing in BusinessDen). We are super excited about our future location which we feel is at the center of NE Denver community.
Eldo to Build ÜG Boulder
We have from the beginning wanted to make Übergrippen more than just another “climbing gym”, we want to make a an “Indoor Climbing Crag”. Our crag will be a community gather place as much as anything. We are building outdoor spaces that are continuous and connected to our facility. This includes a lawn that can be used for outdoor yoga, a patio for relaxing with friends after a hard session of climbing, and now our outdoor boulder that will allow you to enjoy the amazing Denver weather while working a bouldering problem (or letting your kids climb on while you relax with your friends). This past month we announced the news of the custom outdoor bouldering feature being design and build for us by our friends at Eldorado Climbing Walls in Boulder. Eldo provided us with this photo of a 3D scale model that will be used to help the fabricators scupt our boulder…we hope you area all as excited as we are!
