NOTICE TO COMPETITORS REGARDING COVID-19 (3/13/2020)
As many of you have recently heard, USA Climbing has suspended the youth sport and speed season for 2020 and with this will no longer “sanction or support local events”. This notice came out just as our setters were putting the finishing touches on the routes for this weekend’s competition! In response to this recent turn of events, we are moving forward with “officially” cancelling our 3rd Annual Sendy McGriffy Youth Climbing Competition, BUT…(keep reading below to learn about our “Unofficial” Sendy Comp). This turn of events is certainly disappointing for us here at ÜG as we have been preparing for this comp since the beginning of the year. We also know all of our youth athletes will be disappointed since they have invested hundreds of hours of training this season to prepare for this and future events.
For all registered participants, we will be refunding your full competition registration fees next week (TeamGrippen Members will receive an account credit for their registration fees which will be applied to future team/membership dues). For those individuals that have pre-purchased a Sendy shirt, they will be made available to pick up at ÜG beginning tomorrow afternoon. Any shirts that are not picked up by the end of the weekend will be packaged and mailed out next week (for current TeamGrippen members, you will be able to pick them up at your next practice).
Now the BUT…the 1st Ever “Unofficial” Sendy McGriffy Competition: We don’t want all the hard work our athletes, coaches, route setters, and staff have done to go to waste. We therefore want to provide an opportunity for our athletes (and their families) to come and experience competition route setting and climbing. Starting tomorrow (Friday 3/13) at 3pm and through our regular close of business on Sunday evening (3/15 at 8pm), we invite all registered “Sendy” competitors and their family members to come in and climb as if you were competing. ÜG feels this provides a great opportunity to practice competition climbing and train for future climbing comps (be it regionals if they are to happen this year, or other future comps your athlete may compete in). We are even adding in adult categories if families would like to participate . There will be no judges or belayers provided and all scoring will be on your honor. We fully expect our competitor numbers will be much smaller and attendance will be spread across the entire weekend. We kindly ask that you please protect yourself and others by staying home if you or a family member is sick.
For all registered Sendy participants and their families, there will be no cost to “compete”; we will offer a discounted day pass for all registered participants AND their families ($20/person). For those athletes and families that elect to come in this weekend, we will check you in and deduct any day pass charges for your family from the registration refund we will process for you next week. Your attendance is a great way to show support for all the work our team put into hosting this year’s comp as well as have some fun with your family and friends.
Obviously, none of us were expecting the recent health concerns due to the spread of the coronavirus. We are monitoring the ever-evolving situation regarding COVID-19 and its local community effects. We are continuing to take precautions as recommended by our local county and state health departments. Any such changes will be sent out as they become available.
Finally, due to the overwhelming influx of calls we are receiving regarding the competition, we do request that in lieu of calling, you send any questions to us via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we will respond as quickly as possible.
We sincerely appreciate all the support our climbing community provides and look forward to future great events.
The Übergrippen Family
