9) Check System
Identify the elements of the CHECK system and describe the meaning of each one to your counselor.
Communication:
Climbing is a team sport. Talk to your belayer constantly. Let them know what you’re doing, if you’re feeling tired, or if you need a break. Clear communication prevents misunderstandings and keeps you both safe.
Hardware:
Your climbing gear is your lifeline. Make sure your ropes, carabiners, harnesses, and belay devices are in good condition. Inspect them for wear and tear before every climb. If something looks suspicious, don’t risk it – replace it.
Equipment:
Different types of climbing require different gear. For example, you wouldn’t use the same harness for top-roping as you would for ice climbing. Choose the right equipment for the challenge you’re facing.
Check:
Before every climb, do a thorough gear check. This means double-checking that your knots are tied correctly, your harness is adjusted properly, and that all your carabiners are locked.
Knowledge:
Climbing has its own set of rules and safety procedures. Learn them! Understand how to belay correctly, how to use different types of anchors, and how to identify potential hazards. The more you know, the safer you’ll be.
