Climb/Belay Wall
This group of 6 scouts will first be tested on their ability to do the following:
-
- to tie a figure-8 follow through.
- to load a brake-assist belay device.
- to belay using the PBUS technique without a climber, yet.
The scouts will be paired up in teams of 2 (climber & belayer) based on matching weight:
-
- They will demonstrate their climbing ability and belaying ability.
- Each pair will have an instructor/adult scout backup belaying and/or setting a safety knot.
If the scouts complete the 3 climbs/belays in time, they are welcome to:
- Continue to belay each other
- Those 14 and older will not need a back-up belayer.
- Climb on auto belay routes.
- Take a rest before the repel portion.
- Scouts are NOT required to get to the top of a climb for their climb to count. Assuming they are comfortable climbing at least 15 ft, that is acceptable.
- Scouts that struggle getting up the wall, will be encouraged to take a 1 take max in order to help make sure they have time to complete their climbs.
- If the scouts complete the 3 repels in time, they are welcome to climb on autobelays or take a rest before the climb/belay portion.
- Scouts are NOT required to make it to the top of the wall. Our ÜG instructor will do their best to find appropriate climbs for each scout.
- Scouts repelling still get experience belaying if it is 15 ft or 50ft.
