Repel Station
You will first be given an orientation on how to use our auto belays.
- A ÜG instructor will provide an auto belay demonstration with one of you and then have an Adult Scout Leader sign off on our Orientation Document. This way the Adult Scout Leader can now manage clipping each of the other scouts in and out of our auto belays.
- Youth 14 and older that can demonstrate that they are able to clip themselves in and out on their own AND show they can do a self-check before each climb can sign the auto belay orientation certificate for themselves and manage their own auto belay climbs on their own.
- Adults with the group will sign they were orientated with the use of the auto belay and will need to supervise youth 13 and under and verify the youth are clipped in correctly before every auto belay.
Your group of 6 will be broken up into 2 groups of 3.
- Group A: 3 scouts can alternate climbs on the auto belay.
- Group B: 3 scouts will start the repel process.
- With time being a factor, the Group A can work through the Auto Belay Orientation test while Group B started with the repel process.
Repel Group- Small Repels:
- In order to make sure you are comfortable with repelling, we’ll be starting you off with 2 repels off a ladder to start with. This will assist in building your confidence, but also make the communication easier than off the big wall.
- Within this group of 3 there is a:
- 1. Repeller
- 2. Tope Rope belayer as the climber goes Up
- 3. Fireman belayer as the climber repels Down
- There will be two 2 ladders used here anchored securely to the wall:
- 1 shorter ladder for our staff to assist on.
- 1 taller ladder for the scout to climb and repel off.
- Within this group of 3 there is a:
Repel Group- Long Repel:
- When you are ready for your long repel, the other group will not be able to climb the belay ledge auto belay. They can watch you, take a break, or maybe climb another available auto belay – of the kids are 13 and under, they need another adult scout to supervise.
- The ÜG Repel Instructor will climb to the top of the 40 ft rappel station to assist you.
- An adult from the scout troop will help clip you into a top rope which the ÜG Repel Instructor will belay them up.
- This will be done from a rope route on the Birthday Party wall directly to the left of an auto belay.
- When you gets to the ledge, you will be clipped indirect to the wall.
- Then when you are on the ledge, you will be clipped into the auto belay off the rappel ledge.
- You will attach your ATC to the rope to rappel.
- After a buddy check, you will lower off the ledge and rappel back to the ground.
- No need for fireman belay here as you will be on an auto belay for backup.
- When the you reach the ground, the adult scout will assist in unclipping the auto belay device from you and will let it retract back to the top for the next repeller and remove the ATC from the rope.
- As you are repelling, the next scout will climb to the belay ledge.
- Once the first three scouts complete their 3 repels they switch with the other group and this process is repeated. Once all the scouts complete their 3 repels, they are welcome to do another long repel IF there is time.
