- Encouraging social distancing by…
- Limiting capacity to less than 25% of our total capacity
- Spreading out check-in times using our reservation system.
- Labeling smaller climbing zones throughout the facility with limited people in each zone.
- Discouraging gathering by removing our lobby furniture for the time being.
- Encouraging climbers to limit their climbing partners to a select few.
- Increased sanitation
- Requiring cloth face coverings as mandated by the City of Denver
- Maintaining our high standard of cleaning and regularly disinfecting high-touch surfaces (doors, handles, counters, etc)
- Providing an overabundance of hand sanitizer stations and encouraging regular cleaning / sanitizing of hands
- Welcoming our healthy community in
- Asking all guests to self-assess their health on entry and offering no-contact temperature checks to anyone who wants one
- We are monitoring the health of our staff and requiring any sick or under the weather staff to go home
- Ventilation
- Did you know that the Crag has always utilized an evaporative cooling system as our primary cooling system? This system uses 100% outside air which maximizes our ventilation using fresh air.
- In addition we have high volume fans and supplemental cooling systems throughout that further increase ventilation and circulation of air
- And we have doors…big doors! When the weather allows (not too hot, not too cold) we will open those big doors to bring an abundance of fresh air into the crag (and often a cool breeze)!
- Contact tracing
- We ask every guest coming to ÜG to check in and out (whether climbing, joining a fitness class, or just spectating). This tracing gives us a full log of everyone that has been to the crag and on what days and times. Our check-in data can be used to support local county contact tracing efforts and allows us to send notifications to guests if warranted.
We are still welcoming day pass and punch card users!

- We are limiting our facility capacity in order to ensure all guests are able to properly and comfortably socially distance from others while at the crag.
- The CDC has stated that person-to-person transmission through respiratory droplets is the primary means for COVID-19 to spread. Maintaining social distancing (6 feet or more between people) reduces this transmission.
- Additionally, the State of Colorado has limited indoor recreation centers to 25% of capacity; our occupancy limits are lower than these limits.
That’s great! Please tell the folks at the front desk that you’d like to take a belay or lead test and we’ll do our best to get you tested as soon as possible.
That’s fine! It’s not required that you pass a belay certification test before climbing in our facility.
Before you begin climbing, we will give you a quick orientation to the facility and show you how we would like you to use our auto-belays.
That’s fine! But a couple questions first:
- Are you coming in on your own?
- If so, we will quickly orient you to the facility and the bouldering area.
- Are you coming in with kids?
- If so, we recommend that they stay on the auto-belays during their first visit. Since bouldering is very dangerous and every fall is a ground fall, we would prefer that your kids don’t boulder during their first visit.
You can bring your own gear, or you may rent from us. Here is what you need:
1) Harness – Required for using the auto-belays or top-rope/lead climbing. We have harnesses that fit all ages, from 3 to 103.
2) Climbing shoes – These shoes have sticky rubber soles and a unique shape that helps them maximize control on small footholds. Climbing shoes are not required (close-toed shoes are) but they definitely make your life easier!
3) Assistive Braking Belay Device – We now require the use of an Assistive Braking Device (ABD) for ALL BELAYERS. This includes active and passive ABD’s; sorry no ATC’s or other “Tube Style” belay devices. If you know how to belay, but didn’t bring your own device, we have you covered. We have Edelrid Jul2’s available to rent as well as a selection of other ABD’s.
We don’t rent chalk, but we have it available for purchase. Most new climbers don’t use chalk until they reach a more advanced level.
You can sign up by clicking here! If you don’t see any available spots but you’d like to participate in the festivities, please check our participant counter above or give us a call at 720-592-0716
- If you are a member, please use the number under the bar-code on your access card to book your spot for free.
Of course!
Please limit this to booking for yourself and your household only.
We have open cubbies available for you to stash your personal items. We also have lockers in the locker rooms and you can bring your own lock if you wish. Lockers are free for day use; for those wishing to store their gear at Übergrippen you may rent a locker (monthly fees apply)!
Please give us a call at 720-592-0716 and we can take care of it for you or move your booking to a spot that works better for you!
Of course! You can book again as long as you are within the booking window for a particular entry time and there is still availability during that time.
Clothes
Wear comfortable athletic clothing. If you’ll be wearing a harness, we recommend wearing longer shorts or pants. Your clothing should have enough stretch so that you can reach those far-away holds!
Shoes
We do not require the use of climbing shoes, but if you opt out of renting/wearing them, be sure to wear closed-toe, athletic shoes instead.
Our staff will constantly be on the prowl to wipe down high touch surfaces such as counter tops, cubbies, & waiver stations. We will also be adding an additional hand washing station right inside our entrance, and there will be more hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility to make sure that you are always only a few steps away from clean hands!
That’s totally fine! Übergrippen is a great place for new climbers to try out the sport.

This is the best place for new climbers to start. Using our auto-belays requires a 2-minute orientation, and then you be able climb any of the auto-belay routes ranging from 5.6 (easy) to 5.13 (hard).

Bouldering is climbing without rope or harness under 16 feet. Since every fall is a ground fall, we don’t recommend that first time climbers try bouldering until they get comfortable with falling from height. Additionally, kids under 14 are not permitted in the bouldering area without a separate bouldering orientation and a signed bouldering agreement from their parent or legal guardian.

A top-rope test (~5 mins) is needed in order to climb & belay in our facility. If you don’t already have the skills, we are happy to teach you in our Learn to Belay class.

A lead test (~10 mins) is needed in order to lead climb & lead belay in our facility. If you don’t already have the skills, we are happy to teach you in our Learn to Lead class.

Our logo is a stylized version of the Matterhorn in Switzerland!
The Matterhorn is located in Alps and was one of the last main alpine mountains to be climbed, not because of its technical difficulty, but because of the fear it inspired in early mountaineers. The first ascent of the Matterhorn happened on July 13, 1865.
Today, the Matterhorn is easily recognized due to it’s peaks and ridges.

That’s a good question!
Generally speaking, a crag is the base of a cliff face where everyone gathers before they climb.
As it relates to ÜG, we are a crag, because we promote a sense of community between our members, guests, and staff. We also encourage people to come gather at our Crag to enjoy some quality time hanging out, climbing with friends, taking yoga & fitness classes, or getting some free beer at a member night!
- Since some climbers like to put ropes in their mouths, community lead ropes will not be provided until further notice. YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO BRING YOUR OWN LEAD ROPE.
- Other rental gear (shoes, harnesses, and belay devices) may be rented. Rental gear will be disinfected with a spray disinfectant after each use.
Übergrippen \uːbər-ɡrɪp-ən\ (noun):
- 1: The intense feeling of relief when finding a jug or good hand hold after a difficult crux.
- A jug is a really big, in-cut hand hold that you shouldn’t have to use much muscle to stay on,
- The crux of the route is either the hardest part of the route or one of the hardest parts. As you climb harder routes, you might notice that some of the climbs could have 2 or even three cruxes.
- 2: An indoor climbing crag located in NE Denver.
Übergrippen is in NE Denver in the Stapleton Neighborhood at the NW corner of Montview Boulevard and Central Park Boulevard (or Yosemite). We are located next to 7-11, Stapleton Fellowship Church, Autowash @ Stapleton, and the Stapleton Veterinary Hospital.
Our location makes it easy to access us throughout NE Denver and North Aurora Neighborhoods as well as from I-70 and the Fitzsimons Medical Campus. We are also only 1 mile away by car (less if you bike or walk) from the new Stanley Marketplace!
Denver International Airport Travelers
Are you looking to climb during a long layover at Denver International Airport? Or staying downtown and want to climb? From both locations it is easy to ride the RTD A-Train to Central Park Station, then connect to the 105 Bus. Travel SOUTH on the 105 1.5 Miles (7 minutes) and get off at the Montview crossing. Use this RTD Trip Planner Tool to help you with the route. You will find the crag just a 500 foot walk to the west. The A-Train departs both Union Station and DIA every 15 minutes. Plan 1 hour or less for the journey each way.
